Training and Events

Challenges Addiction Treatment Center in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. will host Ron Mercer, PhD, LMHC, NCC, BCFE, an expert on hypnotherapy for pain management, for an Advanced Clinical Skills Training Workshop, to be held from noon to 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 16.

Dr. Mercer, co-director and co-owner of the Center For Creative Living, will discuss “Hypnosis For Pain Management,” and says participants will leave the workshop with the ability to share the counter-conditioning hypnotherapy technique with clients. Ideally, participants will have a basic knowledge of hypnotherapy so that they can successfully apply this technique.

“We’ll be discussing a self-hypnotic technique that isn’t a panacea but it certainly works to help with pain management and anxiety reduction,” says Dr. Mercer.

The counter-conditioning technique “takes pain away by fooling the brain,” adds Dr. Mercer. “You’re giving the brain a different suggestion with an image, whether it’s a beautiful forest or a sunset, which becomes a substitute for that pain threshold.”

Hypnotherapy is widely considered to be an ideal way to help patients deal with chronic pain management as an alternative to pain medication, something that’s becoming an increasingly important option as prescription drug misuse continues to sweep across Florida.

Dr. Mercer has authored four books, including Men-in-Pause, Little Boy Lost and 9-11: Critical Incident, as well as three hypnosis/self-improvement audiotapes, Optimal Golf, The Performing Artist and Cancer Wellness. Mercer’s newest book, The Unspoken Language of Men, is slated for publication in late November of 2011.

The training will be held at Challenges Addiction Treatment & Relapse Prevention Center, 5100 Coconut Creek Parkway, Fort Lauderdale. The workshop carries 2 CEUs for LPN, RN, LCSW, LMFT, LMHC and Interns and includes complimentary lunch. Ideal participants include practicing clinicians, EAPs and nurses. Attendance is limited to 20 participants.
