Alcoholism among seniors expected to tripleAlcoholism and drug addiction within the nation’s senior population is expected to triple by the year 2020. Addiction experts cite a number of stressors, including financial strain, unemployment and declining health, as catalysts for increased addiction.

Earlier this summer, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration completed a study that showed the rate of illegal drug abuse has increased more than 3 percent among 50- to 59-year olds throughout the last eight years, according to a story posted on NewsMax.com.

Older addicts face another issue that’s less common in other age groups. Medical professionals have a greater tendency to misdiagnose addiction in older adults, according to a story published on Tampa Bay Online. Instead, they’ll classify the problem as dementia or depression. Some warning signs that are common to drug addiction may also be exhibited as a result of another medical condition, yet the inability of a doctor to identify a possible addiction represents a lapse that continues to affect the aging population.

Experts say alcoholism is the most common addiction among seniors. As people get older, their tolerance for alcohol decreases, yet they might not be aware of this gradual change. Instead, they drink the same amount – or more – as they would when they were younger, resulting in a more pronounced state of intoxication that can affect their mental and physical well-being.

Prescription drug abuse represents another problem, especially since many older people are already taking one or several prescription drugs. Estimates show that between 40 and 90 percent of older people don’t take their prescriptions properly, according to TBO.com, which results in adverse effects.

Seniors are at a higher risk for other addictive behaviors, including gambling and hoarding. If you’re a caretaker for an aging family member or friend, be observant to any changes in behavior or the person’s physical appearance and health. If you notice anything out of the ordinary, don’t hesitate to consult a doctor for help pinpointing a diagnosis and identifying a proper treatment program.
